As you might have guessed, I’m Mary Dynese. I’m a costume designer and artist from the California Bay Area. As a child, I loved playing dress up and telling people what to do, so I was thrilled to find out combining those two could be a career. I recently completed a BFA in Theatre Design and Technology with a focus in Costume Design at Baylor University in Waco, TX. An outdoor, design-focused, adaptation of a Christmas classic made six feet apart. I used a Pepakura pattern for the Mark VI Master Chief Spartan Armor from Halo. It’s made from card-stock cut and folded into shape then glued into place. Working from only two available reference images, I cut out cardboard and paper mâchéd the pieces together. A few coats of red spray paint, a DIY stencil, and a matte sealant finished out the project. It was taken to FanimeCon 2017, where they didn’t require me to peacebond it. I rubbed furniture antiquing on the exposed edges to simulate the wear and tear of battle. Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche - Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche was produced at Baylor University in fall 2019 as an Advanced Directing capstone. Set in 1956, the play follows the women of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein at their annual Quiche Breakfast. Everything is going fine until a literal nuclear bomb drops and traps them inside their meeting hall. I made it using a Vogue pattern based on a design originally printed in 1954. The challenge was to create a look suitable for a proper English lady that could withstand an animalistic quiche eating frenzy. I have to admit, I was a little self-indulgent, as periwinkle is my favorite color! I also couldn’t resist the women’s outfits roughly forming a rainbow as a nod to the LGBTQ+ flag. I wanted the clothes to feel old, but not impossible for today. I pulled inspiration from many sources, from 1940’s army uniforms to Jackie Kennedy. The directors and I made a point to use green to communicate something eerie and uncomfortable and to highlight the only instance of red: Haemon’s corpse. The directors wanted to show how Sophocles’ play was still not only applicable, but enjoyable in the 21st century. I used a Pepakura pattern for the Mark VI Master Chief Spartan Armor from Halo. It’s made from card-stock cut and folded into shape then glued into place. I rubbed furniture antiquing on the exposed edges to simulate the wear and tear of battle.
